It sprays water at full pressure just fine, but the detergent tank never empties and no suds come out. Nine times out of ten this isn't the pump at all — it's the nozzle or the pressure setting. Here's how to fix it, starting with the free checks.
Most pressure washers use a downstream injector to add detergent. It works by suction: as water flows past the injector, a drop in pressure creates a vacuum that siphons soap from the tank or bottle into the stream. The catch is that the vacuum only forms at low pressure. Run the machine at full pressure and there's no pressure drop, no suction, and no soap — even though the pump and everything else are working perfectly. That's why a washer that sprays water fine can still refuse to draw detergent.
This makes soap trouble a different animal from the pressure and bypass symptoms in the rest of this cluster — it lives downstream at the injector, not at the pump or the unloader valve. So the fixes start with the two things that switch the injector on: the right nozzle and low-pressure mode. Only if those are correct do you move to clogs and worn injector parts.

The most common cause by far, and free. The narrow high-pressure tips keep the system at full pressure, which shuts the injector off. Detergent only draws through the low-pressure soap nozzle — usually the black tip — or an adjustable nozzle set to its low-pressure position.
On machines with an adjustable wand or a dual-lance gun, the injector only draws when the wand is set to low pressure. If it's still in high-pressure mode, no vacuum forms at the injector and no soap is pulled — the same problem as the wrong nozzle, just a different control.
Detergent that's too thick, or a small filter on the end of the siphon tube gummed up with dried soap, chokes off the supply before it reaches the injector. The injector can be working perfectly and still get nothing to pull.
Dried detergent left in the system builds up inside the injector passage and its check valve, blocking the suction path. This is the classic result of never flushing clean water through after soaping.
A downstream injector has to pull detergent all the way to the gun. Add a long hose extension and the suction can drop below what the injector needs, so soap that used to work suddenly won't. A telltale is that it stopped right after you added hose.
Last, once the free checks and clogs are ruled out: the injector has a small check valve and o-ring that let it hold suction. When those wear, the injector can't build the vacuum and won't draw even when everything else is correct.
