Why the Pressure Pulses Under Load

A pressure washer pump makes pressure by drawing water in and forcing it out in rapid strokes. For the output to stay smooth, every stroke has to get a full charge of water and pass it cleanly through. When the pressure pulses high and low in a steady beat while you spray, it means some strokes are coming up short — the pump is being starved, restricted, or is losing a clean charge somewhere. The rhythm is the tell: a mechanical, repeating pulse, not a random stumble.

This is a different problem from a machine that only acts up when you release the trigger and surges at idle — that one points straight at the unloader valve. Water

Restricted Water Supply

The single most common cause. The pump has to be fed as fast as it pumps, and a half-open spigot, a kinked hose, or a narrow-bore garden hose can't keep up. Starved of water, the pump can't fill each stroke, so pressure surges and drops in a steady beat.

Fix: Open the spigot all the way, remove any kinks, and use a full-bore hose kept as short as practical. Confirm the supply can actually deliver the pump's rated flow before looking anywhere else.

Air

Trapped Air in the System

Air left in the pump and lines after hookup compresses and expands on each stroke, so the output pulses until it's purged. Common on a fresh setup or right after reconnecting hoses.

Fix: With the water on and the machine running, hold the trigger open with no nozzle for 30–60 seconds until the stream runs smooth and sputter-free. If the pulsing clears, that was trapped air.

Nozzle

Clogged or Worn Nozzle

A nozzle partly blocked with grit restricts the outlet unevenly and makes the pressure jump and drop. A nozzle worn oversize does the opposite — it drops working pressure enough to destabilize the whole system. Either way, the nozzle is a fast, cheap thing to rule out.

Fix: Clear the tip with a nozzle-cleaning wire or swap in a fresh, correctly sized nozzle rated for your machine's pressure and flow. Try a known-good nozzle to confirm.

Filter

Clogged Inlet Screen

The screen at the water inlet catches grit and scale, and once it's partly blocked it starves the pump the same way a restricted supply does — just downstream. It's an easy one to miss because it's small and hidden at the inlet fitting.

Fix: Pull the inlet screen and rinse or replace it. If your water is hard or you draw from a tank, check it more often — it clogs faster than people expect.

Worn or Stuck Check Valves

Now into the pump. The inlet and outlet check valves let water in on one stroke and out on the next. If one sticks or wears, the pump loses a clean charge on some strokes and the output pulses — persistent surging that survives good water, a clean nozzle, and purged air points here.

Fix: Remove and inspect the check valves for grit, wear, or a stuck poppet. Clean them, or fit a pump valve kit — most pumps are serviceable rather than throwaway here.

Bypass

Worn Unloader Valve

Least likely for spray-time pulsing but worth checking last: a worn unloader can oscillate under load, adding a surge even while the trigger is held. If everything above is clean and it still pulses, the unloader is the remaining suspect.
