Recoil, or Engine?

Every guide gives you the same jumbled list of causes. One test splits that list in half before you unscrew anything.

The Test That Halves the Problem

A stuck starter cord has two entirely separate families of cause. Either the recoil assembly has failed — spring, rope, pulley, pawls — or the engine physically cannot turn, and the starter is simply reporting that fact.

Those two need different repairs, and telling them apart takes about five minutes.

  1. Pull the spark plug capDo this first. If the cord frees suddenly it can spin the engine, and you do not want ignition while your hands are in the housing.
  2. Unscrew the starter housingThe recoil assembly is held on by a small number of screws — four on most handhelds and backpacks. Lift the whole assembly clear of the engine.
  3. Pull the rope with the housing off the machineThis is the diagnostic. The recoil is now disconnected from the engine entirely, so nothing but the starter itself can resist you.

The Recoil Is Fine — It's the Engine

Your starter works. Something is stopping the crankshaft turning, and the cord is just the messenger.

  • Debris jammed in the fan or impeller — a twig, a stone, a piece of rag. Very common if the blower stalled mid-use
  • Hydrolock: fuel or oil has filled the cylinder, usually after the machine was stored or transported on its side
  • A genuinely seized engine, from running dry, wrong fuel mix, or overheating

The Fault Is in the Recoil

The engine is almost certainly fine. Everything you need to fix is inside the assembly in your hand.

  • Rope has jumped off the pulley track, or wrapped itself around the hub
  • Rope trapped between the pulley and the housing wall
  • Recoil spring broken or unwound from its anchor
  • Pawls damaged — often from years of hard, sharp yanks
The tell before you even open it: a cord that pulls out partway and then hangs there, refusing to retract, is nearly always a recoil fault — the spring is not doing its job. A cord that will not move at all, from the first inch, points at the engine. Not a guarantee, but it will usually be right.

Fixing the Engine Side

If the rope pulled freely off the machine, work through these before assuming the engine is scrap.

Check for debris first, always. If the blower stalled during use and the cord locked immediately afterwards, something almost certainly went into the housing. Look at the fan and impeller before anything else — this is the cheapest possible outcome and the most likely one in that scenario.

Then check for hydrolock. Remove the spark plug entirely and try turning the engine over. If it now moves freely, the cylinder was full of liquid. Expect fuel or oil to spit out of the plug hole, so point it away from yourself. Leave the plug out for a while, turn the engine over a few times to clear the cylinder, dry or replace the plug, and try again.

If it still will not turn with the plug out, the engine is seized. On a handheld blower this is often the end of the machine economically — a replacement short block frequently costs more than the blower is worth. On a backpack or commercial unit it may well be worth a repair quote.

Do not force it. Levering the flywheel or using a breaker bar on a seized engine turns a possible repair into a certain replacement. If the engine will not turn by hand with the plug removed, more force is not the answer.

Fixing the Recoil Side

With the assembly off the machine and on a bench, the repair is usually straightforward — with one important exception.

Rope off the track or wrapped on the hub. The most common and the easiest. Free the rope, seat it back in the pulley groove, and wind it on in the correct direction. If the spring has lost its pre-tension in the process, you will need to wind the pulley a few turns before threading the rope back through the housing eyelet.

Rope pinched between pulley and housing. Same fix, but check the rope for damage where it was trapped. A frayed section will part under load and leave you with a worse job.

Damaged pawls. These are the small pivoting dogs that engage the flywheel. They wear, and they break when the machine is started with sharp violent yanks rather than smooth full pulls. Individual pawls are usually available and easy to swap.

A broken spring is the exception. Sourcing a correctly sized replacement spring is genuinely difficult, and fitting one is fiddly and occasionally hazardous — a coiled starter spring under tension can escape its housing at speed. For most homeowners, replacing the complete starter assembly is the better call, and it usually costs little more than the spring alone.

Release the tension before you dismantle. Before removing the central screw on a recoil assembly, let the spring unwind fully — pull the rope out, hold the pulley, work the rope out of the handle, and let the pulley turn back slowly under control. Undoing that screw with the spring still wound is how people end up with a spring across the garage and a cut hand.

Does the Brand Change Anything?

Not much. Every gas leaf blower uses the same recoil principle, and the diagnostic split above applies identically across all of them. What varies is access and whether an assisted-start system sits in the middle.

STIHLMany models use an assisted-start system that places a second spring between the handle and the pulley, so the rope pulls long and soft by design. That changes what "feels wrong" — a stiff pull on one of these is a stronger signal than on a standard recoil. The assembly also has an extra stage to inspect.
EchoStandard recoil on most handheld and backpack models, typically four screws on the starter cover. Straightforward access, nothing unusual inside.
HusqvarnaStandard recoil. Several models include an air purge bulb, which is unrelated to the starter but worth not confusing with it while you have the covers off.
RyobiStandard recoil on gas models. Note that cordless Ryobi blowers have no starter at all — if you are searching this for a battery model, the problem is elsewhere.
Troy-BiltStandard recoil. Commonly reported symptom is the cord hanging out and refusing to retract, which is the recoil-side branch above rather than an engine fault.

Stopping It Happening Again

Recoil assemblies mostly fail from how they are used rather than from age.

Pull smoothly and fully. Short sharp yanks are what break pawls and fray rope at the eyelet. A firm, smooth pull through the full length of the rope is easier on the mechanism and starts the engine more reliably — covered in how to start a gas leaf blower.

Never let the handle snap back. Guide it home. Letting it fly is what drives rope off the pulley track.

Store it upright. Hydrolock happens when machines are laid on their side with fuel in the tank. This is also part of correct winter storage, which prevents a whole family of spring no-start problems.

Pull Cord FAQs

No movement from the first inch usually means the engine cannot turn, not that the starter failed. Seized engine, hydrolock, or debris in the impeller. Remove the housing and test the rope alone to confirm.
That is a recoil fault, not an engine one. The spring has broken or unwound, the rope has come off its track, or the pawls are damaged. The engine is usually fine.
Often. Rope off its track or wrapped on the hub can be freed and rewound. A broken spring is the exception — sourcing and fitting one is difficult enough that replacing the complete starter assembly is usually the better call.
Barely. Stihl, Echo, Husqvarna, Ryobi, and Troy-Bilt use the same recoil principle and the same diagnosis. What differs is housing access and whether an assisted-start system adds a spring stage between handle and pulley.
Stalling followed immediately by a locked cord points at the engine. Something likely entered the housing and jammed the fan. Check for debris before assuming a seizure.
Recoil faults, almost always — they are cheap parts and an hour's work. A seized engine on an inexpensive handheld usually is not, since a short block can cost more than the machine. On a backpack or commercial unit, get a quote.

Diagnose Before You Dismantle 🔧

Five minutes with a screwdriver tells you whether you are buying a $15 pawl or writing the machine off. Everything else follows from that one test.
