Gutter Leaking at the
Seam, Corner, or Joint

Most seam leaks get sealed twice because the first repair treated the symptom. Find out what is actually failing before you open a tube.

Start With Where It Drips, Not With Sealant

A gutter joint is sealed, not welded, so every seam is a designed weak point. But a seal that has been doing its job for years does not simply give up. Something changed — and in most cases that something is water sitting where it should be moving.

The location of the drip tells you which. Work through these before you buy anything.

Water escaping where the gutter meets the downspout, or at an elbow seam, is the clearest signal there is. These joints sit below the water line only when drainage has backed up.

Sealing this does nothing. Clear the downspout and the leak usually stops on its own.

Inside corners take concentrated flow from roof valleys, so their seals wear faster than any other joint. If the corner is near a downspout, suspect drainage first.

Where the volume itself is the problem, a splash guard or a diverter at the valley does more than resealing ever will.

Where two straight sections overlap, a drip that appears in ordinary rain is genuine sealant failure. Sectional gutters have these every ten feet or so; seamless runs have none.

End Cap

End caps carry a structural load as well as a watertight one, and they flex every time the run expands. Their seals fail more often than splices do.

Worth using the strongest-bonding sealant here rather than the most flexible.

Behind the Gutter, Against the Fascia

Water running down the board behind the gutter is not a seam problem at all. It is usually a missing drip edge or a gutter hung slightly too low for the roof line.

Sealant will not fix it, and packing the gap with caulk traps water against the wood.

Several Joints at Once

When multiple seams weep along the same run, the seals are rarely all failing together. Far more often the run has lost its pitch, or a hanger has let go and the section now holds standing water.

Correct the slope first or you will be back on the ladder next season.

The pattern that gives it away: if the joint only drips in heavy rain and stays dry in a light shower, the seal is intact. It is being overwhelmed by water that cannot drain fast enough. That is a clearing job, not a sealing job.

Why Seals Fail Early

Gutter sealant is generally expected to last somewhere between five and twenty years. When one fails well inside that window, there is normally a reason beyond age.

Standing debris. Packed leaves hold moisture against a joint for weeks at a time. Constant wet is far harder on a seal than the occasional soaking, and in sectional gutters it can corrode the overlap itself. This is the mechanism that ties seam leaks back to cleaning: a run that gets cleared twice a year rarely develops early seam failure.

Thermal movement. Aluminium expands and contracts noticeably with temperature. Across a wide seasonal swing, a thirty-foot run shifts back and forth by roughly three-eighths of an inch every year, and every one of those cycles works at the joint. Rigid sealants crack under that movement; flexible ones absorb it.

UV exposure. Sunlight hardens and shrinks many sealants until they pull away from the joint. This is why a bead that looks intact from the ground can still be leaking — the bond has released even though the material is still there.

The wrong product. Asphalt roof cement is the classic mistake. It goes brittle in cold weather and softens in heat, so it either cracks or runs. Anything you use should say gutters or exterior metal on the label.

Choosing the Sealant

Three materials cover almost every gutter repair. They are not interchangeable, and the right one depends more on the joint than on the gutter.

If rain is coming within the hour, use silicone and accept that it is temporary. Redo it in butyl once you have a dry window long enough to cure.

Sealing the Joint Properly

Most failed repairs fail at preparation, not application. The bead is the last five minutes of the job.

  1. Clear the run firstEmpty the gutter completely and flush it. If debris caused the failure, sealing over it just restarts the clock. This is also the moment to confirm water actually reaches the downspout.
  2. Strip every trace of the old beadNew sealant bonds to the gutter, not to the old sealant. Scrape it all out — wire brush on aluminium or steel, plastic scraper on vinyl so you do not score the surface.
  3. Degrease, then dry completelyWipe the joint with denatured or rubbing alcohol and let it flash off. Silicone and polyurethane will not bond to a damp or oily surface, and a joint that looks dry can still hold water in the overlap.
  4. Seal from inside the channelThis is the step people skip. A bead applied to the outside gets pushed away from the joint by water pressure during heavy rain. Sealed from the inside, that same pressure presses the bead into the seam.
  5. Work it into the overlapPress the bead down so it keys into the joint rather than sitting on top of it, extending a couple of inches either side of the seam.
  6. Let it cure before the next rainCure times vary widely between the three materials. Check the tube and give it the full window — a bead that gets rained on halfway through curing will fail early.
When sealing is the wrong answer: if the section is corroded through, the gutter has pulled away from the fascia, or the same joint has now failed two or three times, the joint is not the problem. Repeat failures at one spot almost always mean water is pooling there because of pitch or a failed hanger. Fix the geometry, or replace the section.

That pattern usually points to a drainage restriction rather than a failed seal. In light rain the water clears the joint; in heavy rain it backs up, submerges the seam, and finds the weak point. Clear the downspout before you reach for sealant.
