Most seam leaks get sealed twice because the first repair treated the symptom. Find out what is actually failing before you open a tube.
A gutter joint is sealed, not welded, so every seam is a designed weak point. But a seal that has been doing its job for years does not simply give up. Something changed — and in most cases that something is water sitting where it should be moving.
The location of the drip tells you which. Work through these before you buy anything.
Water escaping where the gutter meets the downspout, or at an elbow seam, is the clearest signal there is. These joints sit below the water line only when drainage has backed up.
Sealing this does nothing. Clear the downspout and the leak usually stops on its own.
Inside corners take concentrated flow from roof valleys, so their seals wear faster than any other joint. If the corner is near a downspout, suspect drainage first.
Where the volume itself is the problem, a splash guard or a diverter at the valley does more than resealing ever will.
Where two straight sections overlap, a drip that appears in ordinary rain is genuine sealant failure. Sectional gutters have these every ten feet or so; seamless runs have none.
This one responds properly to a reseal.
End caps carry a structural load as well as a watertight one, and they flex every time the run expands. Their seals fail more often than splices do.
Worth using the strongest-bonding sealant here rather than the most flexible.
Water running down the board behind the gutter is not a seam problem at all. It is usually a missing drip edge or a gutter hung slightly too low for the roof line.
Sealant will not fix it, and packing the gap with caulk traps water against the wood.
When multiple seams weep along the same run, the seals are rarely all failing together. Far more often the run has lost its pitch, or a hanger has let go and the section now holds standing water.
Correct the slope first or you will be back on the ladder next season.
Gutter sealant is generally expected to last somewhere between five and twenty years. When one fails well inside that window, there is normally a reason beyond age.
Standing debris. Packed leaves hold moisture against a joint for weeks at a time. Constant wet is far harder on a seal than the occasional soaking, and in sectional gutters it can corrode the overlap itself. This is the mechanism that ties seam leaks back to cleaning: a run that gets cleared twice a year rarely develops early seam failure.
Thermal movement. Aluminium expands and contracts noticeably with temperature. Across a wide seasonal swing, a thirty-foot run shifts back and forth by roughly three-eighths of an inch every year, and every one of those cycles works at the joint. Rigid sealants crack under that movement; flexible ones absorb it.
UV exposure. Sunlight hardens and shrinks many sealants until they pull away from the joint. This is why a bead that looks intact from the ground can still be leaking — the bond has released even though the material is still there.
The wrong product. Asphalt roof cement is the classic mistake. It goes brittle in cold weather and softens in heat, so it either cracks or runs. Anything you use should say gutters or exterior metal on the label.
Three materials cover almost every gutter repair. They are not interchangeable, and the right one depends more on the joint than on the gutter.

Most failed repairs fail at preparation, not application. The bead is the last five minutes of the job.
